Is your insurance renewal coming up? Whether you’ve been through the process many times or are renewing online for the first time, a little preparation can save time, money, and stress.co
At King Insurance, we help clients renew their ICBC Autoplan policies every day, both in person, over the phone or email. Whether you’re visiting us or renewing online, here’s everything you need to know to make your renewal process as smooth and efficient as possible.
When Can You Renew Your ICBC Policy?
You can renew your ICBC insurance up to 44 days before your policy expires. ICBC will mail you a renewal reminder, but you don’t have to wait for it to act. If you already know your expiry date, feel free to reach out early. Renewing online ahead of time ensures there’s no lapse in coverage.
What Insurance Documents and Info You’ll Need Before You Start
Whether you’re renewing online, by phone, or at an Autoplan broker like King Insurance, it’s a good idea to gather the following items:
- Your renewal reminder and insurance papers
- Your BC driver’s licence number and birth date
(for yourself and any new listed drivers you want to add to the policy) - Your licence plate number
- Your vehicle’s current odometer reading
(important if you’re applying for the distance-based discount) - Payment information
(credit card if paying in full, or bank account info for monthly installments)
If your vehicle is one of several jointly owned vehicles, make sure all owners are available to provide consent or signatures if needed.
Having this information ready will speed up the process and help you avoid multiple trips or follow-up calls.
Online Renewal, Phone, or In Person? How to Renew Your Policy
There are several convenient ways to renew your policy:
- In person: Visit King Insurance or another licensed Autoplan broker near you.
- By phone: Call King Insurance to renew over the phone. We’ll guide you through each step.
- By email: We also accept email renewals.
- Online: Some policyholders are eligible to renew online through ICBC’s online portal.
Tip: If you’re unsure about which renewal method is best for your situation, just give us a call. We’re happy to walk you through your options.
Planning to Make Changes?
Thinking of adding a new driver, updating your vehicle use, or exploring ways to save on your premium? You can estimate your updated insurance costs using ICBC’s online tool. It’s available through the ICBC website, and you’ll need to log in with either your BC Services Card app or through Interac® verification.
A King Insurance advisor can also help you explore your options, from adjusting deductibles to upgrading to optional coverage like Collision or Comprehensive.
Save with the Distance-Based Discount
If you drive less than the average BC driver, you might qualify for a distance-based discount on your Optional ICBC coverage. To qualify, you’ll need to submit two odometer readings:
- Your previous reading (from your last policy term)
- Your current odometer reading
We’ll help you report your mileage and determine if you’re eligible for the discount. It’s a simple way to save—especially if you work from home or don’t use your vehicle often.
Why Rates Are Changing
You might notice that ICBC rates, especially for Optional coverages, are fluctuating more often than they used to. That’s because vehicle technology is evolving rapidly, and the cost of repairs is rising.
Today’s cars are equipped with advanced safety features, sensors, and custom parts that are more expensive to replace or recalibrate after a crash. As a result, ICBC now reviews its Optional coverage rates quarterly to better reflect current claims costs and market trends.
Clear Outstanding Fines Before Renewing Your Driver’s Licence
Before you can renew your policy or licence, ICBC requires that all outstanding amounts, such as violation tickets, penalty point premiums, or Autoplan debts, be paid in full.
You’ll also need to ensure your licence plate is not associated with any unpaid fines or violations. If you’re unsure whether you owe anything, we recommend contacting ICBC Account Services at 604-661-2723 (or 1-800-665-6442) before starting your renewal. Ignoring these debts could delay your renewal or affect your eligibility for certain coverages.
Driving Record Still Matters
Your driving history plays a key role in determining your premium. Frequent or serious convictions—like speeding, distracted driving, or impaired driving—can lead to higher rates for Collision and Third Party Liability.
Good driving habits, on the other hand, are rewarded. At King Insurance, we’ll make sure your driving record is up to date and that you receive any discounts you’re entitled to.
