Buying a used vehicle can be an exciting milestone — but if you’re not careful, it can also become an expensive mistake. Whether you’re a first-time buyer or simply looking to upgrade without the price tag of a new car, it’s essential to approach the process with preparation and a clear checklist.

At King Insurance, we help clients with every step of the vehicle insurance and registration process. This guide will walk you through how to buy a used vehicle in British Columbia and make sure it’s properly registered, insured, and road-ready.

Step 1: Do Your Homework Before Buying a Used Car in B.C.

Before you ever set foot on a dealership lot or respond to a private seller, it’s crucial to narrow down what you’re looking for. Start by asking yourself:

  • Is this vehicle for commuting, family use, or work?
  • Do you need more cargo space or better fuel economy?
  • Are you open to electric or hybrid models?

Write down your needs, then research makes and models that align with your lifestyle. Pay special attention to safety features, fuel or battery efficiency, and long-term ownership costs.

Don’t forget to factor in car insurance. The type of vehicle you choose can significantly impact your premiums. Contact your Autoplan broker or talk to one of our experts at King Insurance to get a quote based on different models you’re considering.

Also consider the resale value of the car and whether you plan to lease or purchase outright. A vehicle with a strong resale track record may cost more up front but save you money down the road.

Once you’ve narrowed your list, take each vehicle for a thorough test drive. Bring a notebook to jot down vehicle details and impressions, and test the vehicle under different conditions if possible, such as city streets, highways, uphill climbs, and parking scenarios.

Step 2: Inspect the Vehicle and Confirm Ownership

Found a vehicle that fits your needs? Don’t sign anything yet.

Start with a visual and mechanical inspection. You can do a quick check yourself (look for rust, uneven wear on tires, and leaks) but it’s smart to have a trusted mechanic perform a full inspection before purchasing.

Ask for proof of registration. The seller should provide their official registration documents, which must match the vehicle’s make, model, and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). If the seller can’t produce this, ask how they came into possession of the vehicle and confirm they are the rightful owner.

If the vehicle was registered outside of B.C., the seller may still need to transfer it to their name before you can legally buy it.

Step 3: Get a Vehicle History Report

One of the most important and often overlooked steps is purchasing a vehicle history report. This document provides critical information, including:

  • Past accidents or collisions
  • Odometer readings
  • Liens or outstanding debts
  • Whether the car was ever stolen or written off

Be sure to get the most recent vehicle history report available. If you’re buying from a dealership, ask if they include one as part of the listing. For private sales, you may need to purchase this report yourself.

Review the vehicle history closely for discrepancies between the seller’s claims and the facts. It’s a small investment that could save you from a much larger loss later. If something feels off, don’t be afraid to walk away.

Step 4: Finalize the Used Car Purchase and Transfer Ownership with a Licensed Dealer or Private Seller

Once you’re satisfied with the condition and history of the vehicle, you’re ready to complete the sale. But buying a used car involves more than just handing over payment and receiving the keys.

You’ll need to bring the following documents to your Autoplan broker:

  • The seller’s signed original Vehicle Registration (APV250)
  • A completed Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T) with original signatures from both buyer and seller
  • An odometer reading if you’re transferring your existing car insurance policy to this new vehicle — this can help determine eligibility for a usage-based discount

At King Insurance, we recommend that both parties — buyer and seller — visit our office together to complete the transfer. This way, ownership is updated, registration is processed, and you can get your vehicle insured and licensed on the spot.

Important: You have 10 days to register the vehicle under your name after buying, per the Motor Vehicle Act. Failing to do so may result in penalties or voided car insurance coverage.

Step 5: Understand Temporary Plate Use

In some cases, you can temporarily use the licence plates from your old vehicle on your new-to-you car, but there are conditions.

You can do this for up to 10 days if:

  • The used car is registered in B.C. or bought from a licensed B.C. dealer
  • You’ve sold or disposed of your old vehicle
  • Both vehicles are the same type (e.g., both passenger vehicles)
  • Both sets of plates are valid B.C. plates
  • Neither vehicle is leased
  • Your old vehicle’s insurance is still valid

During the 10-day grace period, make sure to keep the following documents in the vehicle:

  • The signed Transfer/Tax Form
  • The original Vehicle Registration
  • Your old vehicle’s valid insurance papers
  • Proof that you sold your old vehicle (such as a copy of the signed transfer form)

Note: If any of these conditions aren’t met — or if you’re unsure — contact King Insurance before driving the vehicle.

Step 6: Return Old Plates to ICBC

Once you’ve registered and insured your new vehicle, don’t forget to return your old plates. Licence plates remain the property of ICBC and must not be sold or transferred between vehicles. It’s a legal requirement to return them to ICBC or your Autoplan broker when they’re no longer in use.
